Wix alternatives for small business

Most people looking for a Wix alternative aren't unhappy with Wix itself. They're tired of building and updating the site themselves. Here are the real options, sorted by who does the work.

First, what's not working on Wix?

Which of these is your reason decides which alternative actually fixes it.

  • The price: Wix plans run about $17 to $39 a month, billed annually, and you pay for the year up front.
  • The time: every change, from new hours to a new photo, is yours to make.
  • The look: the site looks like a template, or like you built it in a rush.
  • The results: it's live, but nobody seems to find it or call from it.

1. Another DIY website builder

Squarespace, GoDaddy's website builder, Hostinger and WordPress.com all work the same basic way as Wix: pick a template, edit it yourself, pay a monthly or yearly plan.

Switching builders makes sense if a specific feature or design style is missing. It won't help if the real problem is time, because you'll still be the one building and updating it.

2. WordPress with your own hosting

Self-hosted WordPress gives you the most control and the biggest library of themes and plugins. It also gives you the most to look after: hosting, updates, security and backups.

It's a good fit if you, or someone you pay, are comfortable maintaining it. For most small business owners, it's more upkeep than a builder, not less.

3. A freelancer or an agency

A designer builds a custom site for a one-time fee, then you pay for hosting and for changes as you need them. You usually own the site outright.

It's the right call when you have the budget up front and a clear idea of what you want. Ask who hosts it, who makes changes after launch and what those changes cost.

4. A done-for-you monthly website

A pay-monthly service designs the site, hosts it and makes your changes for one monthly price, with little or nothing up front. You trade some control for never having to touch an editor.

Skosh works this way: $0 down, then $69, $99 or $149 a month depending on pages and changes, with a 12-month plan and your domain included in your name.

5. Stay on Wix, but get help

If your Wix site is fine and you just need it kept current, hiring someone to update it can be the cheapest fix. Make sure they can log in as a collaborator, not with your password.

Before you switch

  • Check that your domain is registered in your name, not the platform's, so it can move with you.
  • Save your text and photos. Builder designs don't transfer between platforms.
  • Note your Google Business Profile and social links, so they can point to the new site.
  • Ask about redirects, so your old page addresses keep working after the move.

What's the cheapest alternative to Wix?

In dollars, another DIY builder's entry plan is usually cheapest. In time, a done-for-you option costs you the least, because someone else builds and updates it.

Can I move my Wix site somewhere else?

Your text, photos and domain can move. The Wix design itself can't be exported to another platform, so the site gets rebuilt. A good provider handles that for you.

Can I keep my domain if I leave Wix?

Yes, if it's registered in your name. You can transfer it or point it at your new site. Check who the registrant is before you cancel anything.

Will switching from Wix hurt my Google ranking?

Not if the move is done carefully: same domain, redirects from old page addresses, and the same or better content. A sloppy move can cause a temporary dip.
